I teach in a professional masters program, which means many of our students are continuing their educations after a several-year hiatus from classroom-style mathematics. We teach math refreshers at the beginning of the program, but four hours of classroom time doesn't do much beyond helping students diagnose the areas where they need to practice. We wanted to refer the students to a resource that would help them with the extra practice needed to re-develop forgotten skills, preferably before failing problem sets or midterms.Our faculty committee looked at several algebra review textbooks and decided that Forgotten Algebra (3rd edition) offered the best blend of explanation, coverage, and practice problems. I remember one student started out doing very badly in my economics class, brought the book to me and asked which chapters to review, and within a few weeks was doing dramatically better. While the student deserves the credit there, the book was clearly a useful aid.The fourth edition appears to improve on the third by offering more worked example problems.Over the past three years, our program has been quite satisfied using Forgotten Algebra as our recommended refresher text for students who learned this material once but need to be reminded of it. We do wish it paid more attention to graphing.
I love this book. I used it to study for my placement tests and felt really well prepared when I got into my class.Even given all the other resources available including youtube tutorials, websites, tutors and teachers, this book is still my favorite resource for algebra topics. I have found no other source that makes algebra as clear and memorable.This fact was really hammered home when in algebra class, we used 'completing the square' to find the properties of a circle and I was completely lost for the first time. I hurried home, pulled Forgotten Algebra off the shelf and saw that completing the square wasn't covered! After youtube video after youtube video on completing the square I found myself yearning for Barbara Lee Bleau's no-nonsense easy-to-understand explanations.Buy this book!
I wanted a review of Algebra for personal reasons. This book is great! The author explains things in detail and there are plenty of problems at the end of each chapter as well as problems within the chapter after something is explained. It includes answers at the back of the book and not just answers but also how the problem was solved in detail. This is an excellent book if you want to review your past algebra or could even be used by someone who hasn't been exposed to the subject.
I like this. There are a couple of errors so far but obvious to me. I like the layout and number of examples and problems. Great review.
This book and its many iterations have been a staple in mine and my kids' lives. It helped me when I went back to college many years ago, and helped my daughter prepare for her End of Class exam for algebra in high school. It breaks things down and categorizes them without filling in with a lot of fluff.
Finally, a math book that a "clueless" student like me can understand! It starts you at step 1 and holds your hand every step of the way. On the advice of a wise woman - I bought newsprint, a bold marker, and wrote out the formulas from the book, and taped them on the walls. I see them everyday. I highly recommend Forgotten Algebra. ;-)
Easy to follow. A good resource for those who need to brush up on their math skills. It provides questions with answers so you can see how you're progressing.
We used this book for an algebra review class. With the right teacher this book will work wonders for your math skills. I've been out of high school for 5 years now, and failed twice on my math entrance exam for the Information Technology & Communications course ill be taking in 01/2018. But thanks to a great teacher and the simplicity of this book I passed my entrance exam with a 96% only getting one question wrong. Strongly recommend to anyone struggling with math. Learned more using this book than i did in high school, Pencils Down.
